Art and soul Virginia beach 2017
October 2-8, 2017 Art and Soul Virginia Beach, Virginia
Monday October 2, 9a-4:30p, Art & Soul Virginia Beach, Virginia
We will build on simple layers in our art journals to create easy yet amazing portraits. First we will create our own unique, layered collage paper using deli paper, acrylic paint, spray ink, stencils, oil pastels and texture plates. Then we will build layers in our art journals, working on multiple surfaces to keep the creative momentum going. We will use spray ink and oil pastels to create quick and beautiful backgrounds and add a bit of collage using the unique papers we created in the beginning of class. The faces we draw will be simple, yet expressive. We will then fill in our faces with color and texture using the oil paint sticks, using subtle shading to create dimension. We will use stamps and collage to reveal and hide layers in the face to create beautiful, soulful portraits.
Tuesday, October 3, 9a-4:30p, Art & Soul Virginia Beach, Virginia
I will share with you my favorite materials and techniques for creating amazing, messy, mixed media backgrounds. We'll add images of people we find in catalogs and/or magazines and incorporate them into our backgrounds as a way to "cheat" without having to draw them in. We'll work on ways to blend them into our backgrounds using a variety of mixed media materials and techniques and transform them into our angels. We will also explore how to save pages in our journals that aren't "working" or we don't quite like by building up messy layers over "not so precious" backgrounds. It's a great way to let go and enjoy the mess making process!

Workshops @ Craftfusion
June 10, 2017 Craftfusion, Mesa, Arizona
I had a wonderful day of teaching at CraftFusion in Mesa, AZ! I had two groups of students; one in the morning where we worked on abstract collage backgrounds and another in the afternoon where we concentrated on drawing portraits onto mixed media backgrounds in our art journals. Both classes were so much fun and as always it was a joy to teach my lovely groups of students some new techniques in building up messy layers and drawing simple yet stunning portraits! I should be returning to teach soon, so keep an eye out for new class offerings in the fall of 2017!
Workshops @ Artlounge on 101
June 3 & 4, 2017 Art Lounge on 101, Encinitas, CA
I returned for a second weekend at Art Lounge on 101 in Encinitas and my students made AMAZING artwork! I'm so proud of and inspired by them! We explored how to make our own collage paper using oil pastels, spray ink, acrylic paint and stencils. We also sketched beautiful portraits and created lush layers with collage, oil paintsticks, stamps, and more.
Weekend @ ARt lounge on 101
March 4 & 5, 2017 Art Lounge on 101 in Encinitas, California
We explored a ton of background techniques using a variety of art media (oil pastels, spray ink, acrylic paint, stencils, collage--just to name a few!) I love how everyone's paintings came out so different and unique. We dripped, splashed, smudged, smeared, collaged, and painted with found objects--it was a LOT of fun!
Marvelous Mixed Media Backgrounds
June 5, 2016 Private Workshop in San Jose, California
I had an amazing group of ladies gather to learn all about mixed media collage. We made our own collage paper with paint, stencils and oil pastels on deli paper. Then we prepped and collaged a 6x6 canvas with our own unique papers and bird images and words of our choosing. Everyone's piece came out so unique and straight from the heart. Most of the students had never participated in a mixed media class before and everyone walked away with amazing artwork!
Creatures and dreamscapes
March 13, 2016 Private workshop in South San Francisco, California
I led a workshop for the Bay Area Art Sisters group where we explored layering acrylic paint and oil pastels as we created our own fantastical creatures and imaginary landscapes. We painted with our hands (!!) mixed our own colors and got downright messy! We painted over layer after layer, keeping areas we loved and taking chances by being fearless and covering up and transforming other areas of the canvas to create something new and exciting!
